Casting Agents
Remember the first casting agent you ever saw? Exactly how close to
reality do you think that portrayal actually was? Was it Rita
Moreno on Electric Company, slogging her way through one hapless
rogue who couldn't get either the lines or the blocking right after
another? Somebody crossly yelling "Next!" is generally what we
think of when casting agents come to mind, much as Rita would yell
"Action!!" only to have her scene fall immediately into disarray.
Casting agents have gotten somewhat of a bad rap in the entertainment
industry. They use you, or even worse, they don't use you, but
either way you end up feeling like crap when they big role you had
been bragging to your friends about while simultaneously ridiculing
other green actors who didn't have casting agents to help get them
these great gigs turns out to be the role of the guy waiting to buy a
paper as the star is walking by. Your line is: "twenty five cents?"
Of course, casting agents can't possibly have a negative impact on
your career unless you let them. The information is out there, there
are many actors with a lot of talent who are willing to advise young
up and comers on which casting agents are good, and which ones will
eat you alive.
